Mr. Yarom Ariav, recently appointed Director-General of the Finance Ministry, spoke next, recalling how he came to appreciate the significance of Israel-United States cooperation during 15 years he spent in the Budget Department. Investment in education is of such central importance that he suggested the 6oth year of Israel’s statehood, which is coming up, should “be presented as the year of education.”

In the BSF tradition, the Bergmann and Neufeld Memorial Awards were presented at the BSF Dinner.

The Bergmann Memorial Awards

These awards, given for the past 30 years, are in memory of the late Prof. Ernest David Bergmann, who was internationally recognized for his significant contributions to organic chemistry, and played a major role in establishing the BSF and then served on the Foundation’s Board of Governors. In keeping with his special interest in young scientists, these awards are given annually to promising researchers below the age of 35, who earned Ph.D. degrees within the last five years, for the most outstanding research proposals in the previous year.

2006 Bergmann Memorial Award to Prof. Christopher Henrich, Department of Psychology, Georgia State University

For his Research Proposal: Development under Duress:  A Transactional-Ecological Model of Adolescent Risk and Resilience

Carried out together with Prof. Golan Shahar, Ben-Gurion University

Prof. Henrich received his BSc. from the University of Chicago, and his Ph.D. from Yale University in 2001.

His main research interest is in contextual factors influencing academic and behavioral school adjustment in children. His research covers an array of factors -- including neighborhood violence, parent involvement, peer groups and motivational orientation. He also studies key educational transitions (e.g., from pre-school to elementary school, and from elementary school to middle school) in at-risk populations, such as children in poverty and/or with developmental disabilities.

Prof. Shahar, his Israeli BSF collaborator, accepted the prize on his behalf. About his BSF partner, Prof. Shahar said, “He is on his way to becoming one of America’s major figures in Developmental Psychology.”
