BSF Energy

BSF Energy is a new, targeted research grants program of the BSF. The first round of applications was in 2010, and resulted in six three-year grants, each for about $200,000. A second round was initiated in early 2011 with $1.2 M to be distributed in grants. The program is limited to research in Alternative Energy, Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency. It is supported by a special contribution by the Israeli Ministry of Infrastructure, and the U.S. Department of Energy, as part of the effort of the two countries to be energy independent. Thus, unlike the regular BSF grant program in which scientific excellence is the main selection criteria, in BSF Energy the application must exhibit an important contribution to the energy balance of the two countries. For example, a proposal for a new type of battery for small gadgets such as cellular phones is not likely to be accepted, even if the idea is new and innovative.

As in all BSF research grants programs, proposal evaluation will be made by a specially convened expert panel, consisting of both Israeli and American energy research specialists. Unlike in the regular BSF grant program, BSF Energy applicants first submit a short pre-proposal, and only if approved by the BSF will they be allowed to submit a full application.

Pre-proposals will not go through a rigorous scientific review, and will be evaluated mostly according to their consistency with the goals of this special program. Full applications will go through the regular rigorous BSF screening process including external reviews, and will have to demonstrate scientific excellence, as well as a high degree of relevance to the declared goals of the program.
