A Start-Up Grant will be awarded for a period of 24 months. The home institutions are required to supplement this award by $15,000, funds that the investigator would not have received otherwise. The two year start-up grant period is meant to enable the junior PI to submit a research proposal for a regular BSF grant, in the next competition in his field, two years after the start-up application.
The award will provide a maximum of $45,000 for the 18-month period, to
cover personnel, consultants, supplies, small equipment and travel required by
the project. The grant will not cover any part of the principal investigator's salary.
An applicant for a Start-up Grant cannot simultaneously submit another
grant application to the BSF, or hold another grant from the BSF.
A progress report will be submitted to the BSF at the end of the first
year, and a final report at the end of the second year.
A Start-Up Grant is awarded for a distinct research endeavor and may not
be used merely to supplement or broaden an ongoing project at the applicants'
institutions. The principal investigator must make a substantial commitment to
the proposed project.
It should be noted that Start-Up Grant applications will be competing for
funding together with traditional types of BSF research project grants. The
BSF has no special funds set aside for these grants.
Start-up proposals should be submitted in the same manner as regular proposals, and will undergo the standard BSF evaluation process.
Nevertheless, Start-Up applications traditionally have a significantly higher rate of success as compared with
standard applications.
