    Eligibility

In order to be eligible  to participate in the NEH –BSF program, both U.S. and Israeli scholars are subject to the regulations of their respective foundations.

    • Each Israeli scholar can submit only one application per academic year to any of the participating NEH programs.
    • An Israeli scholar with an active BSF research grant is allowed to submit an application to any of the NEH-BSF programs.
    • It is permissible to submit both to an NEH-BSF program and to any of the other BSF programs

    Financial Terms

    • The size of the grant can be up to $50,000/year. The duration of the grant for the Israeli will be the same as that of the NEH grant for the American scholar (between 1 to 3 years).
    • Award amounts for Planning International Collaboration is up to $25,000 or Convening up to $50,000.
    • Amounts in the BSF system are always in dollars, however, Israeli researchers will receive the money in Shekels. So, the maximum amount per year for the Israeli is capped at 203,000 NIS. For the International Collaboration or Convening it is capped at 125,000 NIS.
    • For programs in which the maximum award amount allowed by the NEH is less than $50,000 per year, the request to the BSF cannot exceed the maximum award amount per year. The amount requested per year from the BSF must be less than or equal to the amount requested per year from the NEH.
    • BSF money cannot be used for the U.S. side of the grant, not even for travel of the US scholar to Israel.
    • All other terms are outlined in the regulation.
    • The terms of the grants to the U.S. scholars are determined by the NEH.

    Submission Information

The following are the current principles that guide the various NEH-BSF programs. However, for the specifics of each program, please use the links for the relevant program to read the details:

    1. The U.S. and Israeli scholars write a proposal together. The narrative must describe the role of the Israeli partner and why his/her role is important..
    2. The U.S. scholar will upload the cv and budget of the Israeli partner to the NEH online system..
    3. The application is submitted to the NEH by the U.S. applicant (alone). A few days later the Israeli applicant (only) submits an application to the BSF, which includes the PDF of the NEH application. The BSF application does not require approval/signature by the U.S. scholar..
